Residential Swimming Pool and Spa Safety

Last modified: March 5, 2008 - 2:56 PM

LIVERPOOL PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL“Did You Know” Fact Sheet Residential Swimming Pool & Spa Safety

 February 2008

Residential Swimming Pool and Spa Safety Checklist

IS YOUR SWIMMING POOL SAFE ???
The majority of drownings and near-drownings in residential swimming pools and spas involve children under 5 years old. Drowning kills more children under 5 years old than any other cause. Unsafe fences, latches and gates combined with lapses in adult supervision are directly responsible for most drownings in this age group. This checklist will help you check if your swimming pool or spa area (indoor or outdoor) meets Councils' basic safety requirements. Council staff can help you with more technical information or a safety inspection to ensure your pool meets the legal requirements. Download a printer friendly version here.

Pools installed AFTER 1 August 1990

1 Is the pool surrounded by a fence which separates the pool from the house? YES / NO
2 Is the fence in good condition and at least 1.2m high? YES / NO
3 Are the gaps in the fence between the vertical sections only 100mm wide or smaller? YES / NO
4 Are the horizontal sections of the fence at least 900mm apart? YES / NO
5 Is the gap between the bottom of the fence and the ground less than 100mm? YES / NO
6 Is the fence free of obstructions such as large pot plants, ladders or anything else a child might use to climb the fence? YES / NO
7 There should be 900mm distance between the water's edge and the pool fence for resuscitation purposes? YES / NO
8 Are the gates at least 1.2m high and do they open away from the pool? YES / NO
9 Are the gates self-closing and self-latching? YES / NO
10 Is the gate release mechanism 1.5m above ground level or alternatively located inside the gate at 1.2m and covered by an approved shield? YES / NO
11 Is there an approved resuscitation chart prominently displayed within the pool area which also states “Young children should be supervised when using the swimming pool”? YES / NO
12 Is the water quality satisfactory? YES / NO
NOTE:             If you have answered “NO” to any of the questions above, your pool DOES NOT COMPLY with the NSW Swimming Pools Act and Regulations. In the interests of the safety of your household and the community, we urge you to contact the Compliance section of your local Council. Staff can assist you with further information and advice and offer comprehensive safety inspections. (Some Councils may charge a small fee).
